Brooklyn, New York ; December Fandom Time
Mindy was happy to be back in Casey's church. Even though she herself wasn't Christian, going to watch him do his pastor thing was an opportunity to get dressed up and be shown off to dozens of trendy old people. Kind of a lower-stakes 'meet the parents,' if you will. And, Casey was fun to listen to. The rap tracks that he played in the background of his sermons helped a lot.
Besides, it was a place to go, since Danny and Jeremy had gone and hired some other doctor and given away Mindy's office.
"From the slums of Port-au-Prince to the streets of NYC, a pastor has returned!" Casey boomed as he made his dramatic entrance through the front door of the chapel. Applause broke out, with Mindy making sure to clap the loudest.
Casey high-fived palms as he sprinted between the pews. "So, let me tell you something, let me tell you something, y'all. Haiti, Haiti, Haiti. Changed my entire world, and the support you guys gave me? Oh, my God, did I need it!" He pointed up at the ceiling, sidebarring, "Talking to you, pal."
But he was also talking to Mindy, because he added, strolling up to the altar, "I came back because of someone very special." Mindy beamed and stood up to wave to the congregation. "I fell in love with a woman. I got engaged, everybody. Min, stand up... well, she's already standing up, that's her style. Mindy! Yeah, I'm in love, guys!"
Mindy turned in a circle while the congregation applauded, showing off her beautiful ring and smiling widely. This was definitely worth the trip out to Brooklyn.
"There's more to thi... you can sit now," Casey told her.
"Okay, baby."
"When Mindy dropped everything to come to Haiti and be with me, it rocked my world," he continued. "'Cause I thought, hey, why don't I listen to my heart? So I said, Hey, Sir Thumps-A-Lot. What's next? And he said, That ministry stuff? That's not that now-now." Mindy frowned. She had not expected this part of the speech. "I think you should leave the ministry, he said. It's time to pursue your music career!"
What?
"So guys, I'm becoming a deejay! And I owe it all to Mindy!"
Mindy could only stare at him. And then, when the gasping and disapproving noises from the congregation made themselves heard, she waved her hands to get Casey's attention and mouthed, What the hell?

Casey, excuse me, DJ Sacrament wasn't the most fun person to be around for the next few weeks. He let his grilled cheese burn while he messed around making music on his computer and then referred to the smoke alarm as a sick beat, he rarely got dressed and allowed his penis to constantly emerge from his pajama slit, and he dragged Mindy to a single music festival, where Morgan got high on a stranger's cupcakes and Mindy wound up inadvertently licking a large man's back sweat.
There were high points, though, like when Mindy got to crowdsurf at his set. It aggravated her scoliosis, but it was still a little fun. And the music was great.
But at the end of the festival, Casey said something unexpected.
"Hey!" Mindy said as she rushed through the crowd to hug him. "You were amazing! Or to put it in your terms, you were very legit."
"You know, I'm glad you said that, 'cause when I was up there I only felt dope," Casey replied without missing a beat.
Mindy took his hands. "Babe, I was so proud of you! And this is your calling. You are an amazing deejay."
Casey didn't smile, though. He took his hands back. Mindy stared at him. "Thank you, but like, when I was up there, I just didn't feel like I was connecting," he said. "'Cause I was fixating on how sorry the layout of this venue is."
What? "You were connecting with me, babe," Mindy assured him, going on tippy-toes to kiss him.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was doing that, but, like, more so, I was like, What's the deal with these fire exits? Why are they blocked?"
"Who cares?" Mindy asked, waving a hand. It was clear that he was going to need her to distract him to stop being so weird. She did a little dance as she reminded him brightly, "All that matters is that you're really good at the thing you want to do!"
Casey wasn't responding well to her cute dance. "What I'm saying is, I don't want to deejay," he said. "Event-planning. That's what I should be doing."
Oh, God.
"Babe," Mindy said sternly, "you just became a deejay."
She couldn't take the constant change of jobs. Someone in their relationship had to be making money, for one thing.
"I know, I know, but this is something I'm feeling!" Casey said. "Event-planning, babe. It's my path. It's our path."
Mindy picked up a plastic wine glass and downed it without even worrying about it being drugged.
